Developing a Company That Gives Back to Your Community

Stonestreeter Paula J. Leon, co-founder of organization Mi Voz Media, discusses the company’s aim to highlight and provide networking opportunities for BIPOC artists

by Paula J. Leon

In August 2020, I started a media website called Mi Voce Y La Tuya. The Media website's mission was to amplify the voices of BIPOC of marginalized genders. We kicked off the launch in the fall with a latinx heritage month series which featured seven interviews with latine artists of colour from different backgrounds and upbringings. Our platform is a place to discuss things that matter to our communities/affects them. In these interviews, it was important to discuss how latines look very different, and how we call on Hollywood to stop showcasing only one narrative and to provide proper latine representation. As a latina myself, it was important for me to kick start this series with topics so close to home. These interviews were inspiring and thought-provoking, much like the rest of the content on the website.

On January 18th, 2021, we relaunched the website under Mi Voz Media, a title that felt more fitting after rebranding with a full team. In the January 11th Letter from the Founder, I said “I wanted to create a community where people could have important conversations regarding issues that directly impacted them. Mi Voce Y La Tuya was meant to be a space for discussions on how new shows claiming to ‘represent’ minorities were not as groundbreaking as mainstream media say they are, how indigenous communities often go unrecognized for all the work they have done for this country, or why streaming services and networks continue to renew all white shows but cancel ones that actually represent people who look like me and my peers. Until Mi Voce, there were no spaces catering directly to people like me, and I knew I would need a team to create one.” And with this team, we gave the website a complete makeover, with a web developer, graphic designers for logos, cover art and illustrations. The whole website is a celebration and plethora of BIPOC greatness.

I encourage you to read up on the team member page as well as visit their individual Instagrams. If you want to hire diverse talent for your businesses, there is absolutely no excuse not to utilize resources such as this! You can't say there aren't any BIPOC *****.  I have a database of product developers, social media coordinators, graphic designers, web developers, writers, video editors, and so much more. Because of this experience, these connections will stay strong, and I will recommend each and every one of them till the end of time.

If you are a BIPOC of a marginalized gender and want to write, be featured by or be a part of the team in any other way, go to mivozmedia.com and email the team at muchachacharla@gmail.com. We’re always looking to feature more voices.
